Se Sauver Wins The Manifold

3 minute read

Se Sauver stamped her ticket to the Thousand Guineas with success in the Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.

The win marked the first Group winner for talented young rider Damien Lane and it certainly didn't come easy with the second consecutive race on the card going into the stewards room.

Se Sauver came strongly on the outside but to the naked eye it did look to no avail with the David Hayes-trained Star Fashion looking to have held on in the tightest of finishes.

The photo showed otherwise but a protest ensued, this time, thankfully for Lane and connections of Se Sauver , the objection was dismissed and their filly keeps hold of some all important black-type.

Solicit took third with race favourite Politeness failing to finish off in the straight after racing wide. The markets second elect Wordplay was left with too much to do and closed between runners late.

“I honestly thought I got beat,” Lane said.

“We were going tooth and nail the whole way up the straight,” said Lane.

“I thought right on the line that he [Chad Schofield on Star Fashion] got me but obviously she got the bob in.

“She's determined, she's been without luck, particularly her last run was just a catastrophe.

“I was very optimistic coming into today, I knew she had it in her, she just needed luck in running.”

Se Sauver scored her first Metropolitan success in Group Two class here after winning a Pakenham maiden only two starts ago. She travelled nicely in eighth place one off the rails before moving up three wide from the 600m, following the favourite (Politeness). She challenged nearing the 200m and then fought gamely to win by the narrowest of margins. Star fashion had a good run sixth between runners to the turn. She gradually worked into clear running at the 200m and then fought on nicely for a very close second. Solicit was last in the 11-horse field to the 600m point. She went to the extreme outside on straightening and then ran on well for a very good third, beaten a length. Fantome Gris raced near the tail of the field, was pushed back to last at the 300m and then ran on late wide-out for a good fourth. The Anthony Cummings-trained Wordplay travelled well in about ninth place, between runners, to the turn. She was blocked in the early part of the straight, got into the clear at the 200m and then battled on for fifth. Politeness was trapped three wide without cover most of the race, challenged at the 300m but her early efforts then told and she weakened for seventh, beaten just under three lengths. *ANZ
