Lions run rampant in 52-point AFLW win over Magpies

3 minute read

Brisbane forwards Taylor Smith and Sophie Conway have kicked three goals apiece as the Lions posted their second AFLW win on the trot.

Brisbane have produced a stunning 53-point unanswered run on the way to a crushing 52-point AFLW victory over Collingwood at Brighton Homes Arena.

The Magpies scored the first eight points of Friday night's match in a promising start for the injury-hit underdogs.

But it was one-way traffic from that point as the Lions piled on the next seven goals to open up a 53-8 lead by three-quarter-time.

A goal to Brittany Bonnici early in the final quarter finally ended Brisbane's 53-point unanswered run, but the contest was already over by that stage as the Lions cruised to a 10.12 (72) to 3.2 (20) win.

Since suffering a 44-point home loss to North Melbourne in the grand final rematch in round one, defending champions Brisbane have now defeated Melbourne and Collingwood to improve their record to 2-1.

Collingwood's loss to Brisbane was the equal biggest in their AFLW history, and the Magpies are now 0-3 and facing a huge fight to salvage something out of their season.

Brianna Davey stood tall for Collingwood with 24 disposals, seven clearances and a late goal, while Grace Campbell battled her heart out with 18 tackles.

But there were few other positives to come out of the game for Collingwood, who lost Eleri Morris to illness before the match.

Taylor Smith and Sophie Conway kicked three goals apiece for Brisbane, while Isabel Dawes (22 disposals, six clearances, one goal) and Ally Anderson (21 disposals, five clearances) were other key contributors.

Collingwood's tackle pressure was hot early, and they scored the first goal of the match inside 90 seconds through Alana Porter.

But the Lions soon took control, winning the inside-50 count 10-5 for the term to take a five-point lead into the break.

Star Lions midfielder Anderson, who tallied an AFLW record 43 disposals last week, was restricted to just five touches in the first quarter.

She also spent some time on the bench after being winded by an opponent's stray boot.

Brisbane kicked 4.5 to 0.0 in a dominant second quarter that gave the home side a 34-point half-time lead.

Conway kick-started the rout with two goals early in the quarter, including a 45m monster.

Smith also kicked two goals for the term, while Cathy Svarc kicked a nice goal on the run.

The Magpies were held scoreless again in the third term, with the Lions registering a wayward 1.5, including two set shot misses to Smith late in the term.

Collingwood showed far more fight in the final quarter, with an early goal to Bonnici and a late major to Davey ensuring the Magpies avoided setting a club record for the biggest loss.
