3 minute read

A closer look at Brisbane's 28-point AFL elimination final win over Carlton at the Gabba that booked the Lions' spot in a semi-final next weekend.

They said it: "They had that record here last year in the prelim and earlier in the year and we wanted to make amends." Harris Andrews on the sides' recent battles.

Key moment: Memories of Carlton's Opening Round comeback at the Gabba were resurfacing after a pair of nervy Lions misses and Carlton's five goals in 15 minutes. However, when Callum Ah Chee finished a sweeping move with 10 minutes to play in the third quarter, the nerves of Brisbane fans and players were considerably eased.

The stat: Carlton became the first team in 50 years to be held scoreless in the first quarter of an AFL final. The Blues avoided setting the lowest score in a half of finals footy thanks to their first two goals in the dying minutes of the second quarter.

Injuries: Lions defender Jack Payne was subbed out at half-time after suffering a knee injury in the second quarter. He will undergo scans in the coming days.

What's next? The Lions head to Sydney to face the Giants in a do-or-die semi-final, with the winner to take on Geelong in the following week's preliminary final. It's end-of-season time for the Blues.
