Sergio Garcia will not be playing in The Open Championship for the first time in 25 years after failing to qualify.
The Spaniard had to compete in a qualifying tournament due to his status as a LIV golfer and has missed the cut.
The 43-year-old finished tied for sixth place at West Lancashire Golf Club, three shots behind the winner.
Qualifying spots were available to the top five finishers with Garcia losing momentum during the final 12 holes.
Speaking after the event, he said: "I am a little disappointed right now but that's the game of golf and you can't take things for granted.
"I'm very thankful that I've been able to play 25 Open Championships. I wanted to keep that run going."
The Spaniard's five-under-par round in the morning put him in a strong position, but he finished three shots short of the nine-under 36-hole score that was required to qualify.
“I felt like I had it early on. I was rolling it nicely,” he said. “I got a pretty bad break on hole 7 in the afternoon and that stopped my momentum a little bit.”
Despite the disappointing setback, Garcia remained positive and praised the crowds in Lancashire.
“I’ve always felt very blessed for the love I get everywhere in the world, but even more here in the UK and to see the kind of crowds we had for a British Open qualifier was pretty impressive.”
The 151st Open Championship will be held on July 20-23, 2023 at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England.
