Tanah Boyd leaves Titans for Warriors' post-Johnson era

3 minute read

Tanah Boyd has been granted a release from the final year of his Gold Coast contract and will join the Warriors for pre-season.

Tanah Boyd will join the Warriors for the post-Shaun Johnson era after being released from the final season of his Gold Coast contract.

A local junior once rated among the Titans' brightest prospects, Boyd had his NRL opportunities curtailed by injury and selection pressure in Des Hasler's first season as coach.

Ex-Wallaby Carter Gordon also arrives at Gold Coast from 2025 to jostle with Jayden Campbell, Kieran Foran, Keano Kini, AJ Brimson and Tom Weaver for opportunities in the spine.

Boyd will face similar competition to break into the halves to begin his new two-year deal, despite a new chapter beginning at the Warriors with the retirement of superstar halfback Johnson.

Luke Metcalf and Te Maire Martin appears the Warriors' strongest halves pairing to begin next season, but Chanel Harris-Tavita is also on the books.

"Tanah's arrival will create healthy competition among our halves," said coach Andrew Webster.

"He brings a great kicking game, strong game management skills and he's also a proven goal kicker. We're really looking forward to having him at our club."

A product of famous rugby league nursery Keebra Park High School, 24-year-old Boyd made 69 appearances across six seasons at the Titans.

Boyd's departure comes only one day after veteran halfback Ben Hunt earned a release from his St George Illawarra deal with the hopes of returning home to Queensland for 2025.

But the Titans appears the unlikeliest of the three southeast Queensland clubs to make a play for the Maroons representative, given their depth in the halves and big money tied up in the forwards.

Boyd's exit comes only one day before the NRL player market opens, with all talent contracted through 2025 able to negotiate with rival clubs from November 1.

The Warriors begin welcoming players back for pre-season on November 1.

Imagine what you could be buying instead.
