Veteran prop James Slipper will captain the Wallabies in the second Test against Wales, replacing the injured Liam Wright.

After becoming the seventh Wallabies captain in just over a year, Wright has been sidelined for Saturday night's match at AAMI Park in Melbourne.

Charlie Cale slots into the No.8 for the first start of his Test career, combining with Fraser McReight and Rob Valetini in the backrow.

Slipper is part of an unchanged front row that includes hooker Matt Faessler and tighthead prop Taniela Tupou.

Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt is hoping to build on their gritty 25-16 win over last year's World Cup nemesis

"We found out a bit about ourselves last week and are looking forward to learning a bit more on Saturday night," Schmidt said.

"We've worked hard again this week in Melbourne and will be going out to earn the support of those in the stands and those at home."

Wallabies: James Slipper (capt), Matt Faessler, Taniela Tupou, Jeremy Williams, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Rob Valetini, Fraser McReight, Charlie Cale, Jake Gordon, Noah Lolesio, Filipo Daugunu, Hunter Paisami, Josh Flook, Andrew Kellaway, Tom Wright.
