Jose Mourinho's latest management role has begun badly, with his Fenerbahce team knocked out of the Champions League in qualifying.

The Turkish team were beaten 3-2 on aggregate in the third qualifying round by Lille.

Canada's Jonathan David converted a penalty in the 118th minute to secure a 1-1 draw after extra time despite the French club being reduced to 10 men nine minutes earlier when Aissa Mandi was dismissed.

Fenerbahce scored in the first minute of second-half stoppage time through Bafode Diakite's own-goal to go 1-0 ahead in the second leg in Istanbul and take the match to extra time.

Lille won the first leg 2-1.

Mourinho was attempting to guide his new team into the revamped 36-team league stage of the Champions League, which he won with Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010.

Also exiting were Scottish club Rangers, who suffered 2-0 defeat by Dynamo Kyiv at Hampden Park to go out 3-1 on aggregate.

With the match goalless, Rangers were reduced to 10 in the 51st minute when new signing Jefte, making his first start for the Light Blues, was sent off after picking up a second yellow card.

Second-half substitutes Oleksandr Pikhalyonok and Nazar Voloshyn then scored two late goals to put the Ukrainian side through.

Malmo scored a 96th-minute equaliser at PAOK Salonika to force extra time and won with a 99th-minute winner.

Other clubs progressing are Slovan Bratislava, Bodo/Glimt, RB Dalzburg, Midtjylland, Qarabag, Sparta Prague and Slavia Prague
