There was a gulf in class at Old Trafford as Liverpool won 3-0 while Tottenham could not make their dominance count at Newcastle.
Two goals from Luis Diaz and one from Mohamed Salah helped Liverpool stroll to a 3-0 victory at Manchester United in the English Premier League on Sunday as Erik ten Hag's side were humbled by their fierce rivals.
Liverpool dominated a United team who could not keep pace in the first half, the visitors taking the lead in the 35th minute through a back-post header from Diaz after United midfielder Casemiro had given the ball away.
Casemiro was also at fault for Liverpool's second when Diaz, again supplied by Salah, swept home. Salah added a third 11 minutes into the second half, but the visitors settled for three as they maintained their 100% record under new coach Arne Slot.
"The goals are always self-inflicted," United captain Bruno Fernandes told Sky Sports. "You need to commit a mistake to give them the goal. We don't need to be pointing fingers at everyone. that won't help us now.
It has been a frustrating start to the new season for Tottenham Hotspur but their rewards will come if they keep performing the way they have in their opening three games, manager Ange Postecoglu said.
Tottenham enjoyed 66% possession and had 20 shots at goal, but lost 2-1 in Sunday's away trip to Newcastle United, where they spurned numerous opportunities and watched as the home side took theirs.
Alexander Isak scored the Newcastle winner against the run of play. Dan Burn's own-goal in the 56th minute had brought Spurs back into the match after Harvey Barnes opened the scoring.
The defeat followed a 1-1 draw at promoted Leicester City in their opening game, where they were equally dominant, and a 4-0 win over Everton.
"Story of our season so far really. We played well and controlled the game for the most part. They (Newcastle) were a threat in transition but we still had enough chances to win the game comfortably," Postecoglu said.
"The goal we conceded in the second half was sloppy and we lost focus. The game should have been put to bed before that."
Postecoglu was without club record signing Dominic Solanke and Brazilian forward Richarlison through injury and will hope they can bring a sharper edge in attack when they return.
Chelsea had to settle for a 1-1 home draw against Crystal Palace after a second-half equaliser by Eberechi Eze gave the visitors their first point of the season.
Chelsea broke the deadlock after Palace defender Marc Guehi made an ill-advised raid forward and lost the ball. A swift counter ended with Nicolas Jackson scoring with ease from close range.
Eze equalised when he curled the ball beautifully into the net from outside the box early in the second half.
