Timeform Review - 2016 Doomben 10,000

3 minute read

Music Magnate secured a maiden Group 1 win for Bjorn Baker when taking out the 2016 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) on Saturday.

With Two Blue, Hooked and Fell Swoop setting a blistering early speed, Music Magnate was able to settle off the pace in fifth before setting out after the leaders at the top of the straight.

Taking the lead at the 200m, Music Magnate was able to hold off Azkadellia over the final stages by just under a length who also ran on well from back in the field with Charlie Boy in third.

The time of 1:17.77 was well inside standard and race par and sealed the impressive recent rise of Music Magnate who has won six of his 12 starts, missing the placings just once in his career.

Music Magnate ran to a new career peak Timeform figure of 117, four pounds above his last start effort when runner up in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes at Scone behind Clearly Innocent.

Music Magnate, a son of Written Tycoon produced a figure just one pound below that of 2015 winner Boban and one pound above Spirit Of Boom in 2014.

The Racing and Sports field strength value (RSFS) of 119.4 is below par for a Group 1 race and below that of the 2015 renewal of 121.

Only nine runners lined up in the race this year and probably did not have the depth we have seen in recent times.

Music Magnate will now head to the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) where he has received a weight of 55.5kg and should he run up to the 121 or even improve off that effort he will be right in the mix.

Recent winners of the race have returned a Timeform figure between 120-125 which puts Music Magnate firmly in the frame to claim yet another Group 1 victory.

Of the beaten brigade Azkadellia ran to 113, three pounds below her Queen Of The Turf win and will take good improvement form that effort into the Stradbroke where she has 54.5kg.

Charlie Boy, who finished runner up in this race last year, returned a figure of 118 when third below the 121 he ran to last year.

Fell Swoop and Hooked who were both in the market weakened off the fast tempo and were both a victim of circumstances. Whilst Hooked will go on to the Stradbroke Fell Swoop will be spelled.

Real Love continued his strong form with another win in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m).

Settling just off the leaders Real Love took the lead in the straight and proved too strong for Puccini in second with Benzini back in third.

Real Love ran to a clear career peak Timeform rating of 116, six pounds above her win in the JRA Cup (2000m) last start.

The Darren Weir-trained runner is the clear highest rated winner of the race since it’s inception in 2006.

The RSFS of 115 is considerably above par for a Group 3 and well above 2015 (103.5) taken our by Faust who ran to 104 in a very weak renewal.

Real Love will now progress to the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 11 and if she runs up to her last two efforts she will be very hard to beat.

The highest recent rated mare to claim victory in the Brisbane Cup was Lights Of Heaven who returned a figure of 118p in 2012.

Of the placegetters Puccini ensured a quinella for the stable and ran to 113, his highest since running second in the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown last year (116) with Benzini in third running to 107.

Peter and Paul Snowden continued their good recent run with two-year-olds after Attention took out the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce (1350m).

Getting a good run off the leader in second, Attention was able to produce a strong effort in the straight to hold off Dreams Aplenty in second with Nikitas third in a tight finish.

Attention who came off a second placing over 1200m in the Champagne ran to a new career peak of 111, four pounds above his previous best.

The RSFS of 109.7 was slightly above the 2015 renewal of 107.2 taken out by Look To The Stars who ran to the same figure as Attention after the fillies allowance who then went on to run third in the J.J Atkins behind Press Statement.

Attention certainly looks to be one of the favourites heading into the Group 1 J.J Atkins at Eagle Farm on June 11 following some good recent form.

Dreams Aplenty continued his good recent form running to a career peak of 110 as did Nikitas in third (109).

Other wins of the day came from Mighty Lucky in the Group 3 Lord Mayors Cup (1615m) who ran to 114, a pound below his previous effort at Scone behind Pajaro who ran second on this occasion improving to run 112.

Mackintosh also continued his run of form to claim a third win in a row in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m).

The Chris Waller-trained runner returned a career peak figure of 109 off a 106p in the Rough Habit Plate.

Second placegetter Eagle Way also ran to a new peak of 108 with Howard By Thy Name running below his best in third, also running to 108.

In a race run at a very quick tempo, Music Magnate settled well back in fifth place, one off the rails. He improved well rounding the home turn, put in a strong run to hit the front at the 100m and then fought back gamely for an impressive win in fast time. Azkadellia was ridden quietly from her outside barrier (9) and settled back at the tail of the field. She commenced a wide move at the 600m, challenged at the 100m and fought very well for a very good second at her first run from a brief let-up looking on track for next month’s Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m). Charlie Boy raced back in sixth place and got along the inner to challenge at the 100m and then battled very well for a good third. Delectation missed the start, recovered to settle in eighth place. He improved (under riding) nearing the home turn, got a split on passing the 200m and the fought on quite well for fourth, beaten a length. Dothraki was back in fourth, tracking the strong pace, put in a run to be in a challenging position at the 200m before finishing (2.3 lengths) fifth. Favourite Fell Swoop raced a bit keenly early on in third place before joining the leaders (Two Blue and Hooked) at the 700m. He went to the lead at the 200m but tired after his early efforts , racing on a hectic pace, to finish (2.7 lengths) sixth.
