The modern Sapphire Coast racecourse at Kalaru on the NSW south coast was built in the 1990s to replace the outdated Bega racecourse. The Sapphire Coast racecourse is the home of the Sapphire Coast Turf Club and is located close to Tathra between Bega and Merimbula.Sapphire Coast Turf Club conducts 11 race meetings during the season, attracting runners from Canberra, Kembla Grange and the Gippsland region of Victoria due to its proximity to the NSW/Victorian border. The feature meeting is the Bega Cup in February.

Sapphire Coast racecourse is big course built on a modern design template that features starting chutes for races over 1000m, 1200m and 1600m.The track circumference is 2000 metres and 30 metres wide. It features banked turns and a long 400m home straight. The sand based track copes well in wet weather but the pattern of racing often favours leaders and on pace runners
