Winning Trainer: Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott (Adrian interviewed)
On winning another Slipper: “Fantastic. We’ve spoken on numerous occasions throughout this week about what this race means to the stable, the industry, the public. It’s a great race to win.
“I’m delighted to be able to do that once again and alongside a special person in Gai Waterhouse, who I have to thank so much for the career. The partnership we’ve been able to do together.
“It’s a great achievement. She has gone to another level again, eight Slippers for her now.
Who was he watching in the run? “That’s where the emotions (take over). It’s hard to know where to look. The race changed complexion there pretty quickly with him (Storm Boy) missing the start.
“I had to watch him try to pick up and I lost track of the others at that point and the way the track has been playing, it has been difficult for them to come up the inside.
“She has been very brave to do that as well and a great ride by Blake Shinn.”
On Lady Of Camelot: “It’s quite phenomenal. Sir Owen Glenn, I’m delighted for him, he puts so much into the industry.
“She’s a homebred for him, we trained the mare. This is the third foal out of her and they’ve all been two-year-old stakes winners, she is obviously the best of them now.
“But a special thrill for him I’m sure. Not only to own her but to breed her with a family he’s got a heavy involvement in.
On Storm Boy’s run: “It got a bit messy for him, he couldn’t get any momentum, he will push on to the Triple Crown I think.”
Winning Jockey: Blake Shinn
On the race: “It was very exciting. I was getting held up there for a bit, but I just had to bide our time and wait for the opportunity to present and when it did she really let down well.
“I had the horse to quicken and we just needed the gap and she was great. I’m so happy.”
On being ridden with a sit: “It just happened like that in the trial and we learned a lot about her. It gave me confidence, and the stable, to be able to execute that going into today.
“She broke really well and when I was able to get that position, everything was just going to plan nicely, I just needed the gap to happen.
“A little bit like Capitalist, when I won on him in 2016, we got it and she did the rest. It was really special.”
On winning a Slipper and first for Waterhouse/Bott: “It means a lot. This is one of the majors and I think more so it means a lot this time because I’ve done it for Adrian and particularly Gai.
“She’s at home watching with a lot of people. She brought me to Sydney and to come back from Hong Kong and for her to give me a chance with Sir Owen Glenn, SStevie O’Connor, Newgate Farm, they born and raised this horse, Henry Field. This is going to make a lot of people happy.”
On celebrations: “We’re on a flight to Hong Kong, but we’ll enjoy it when we get back.”
More on combining with Waterhouse to win a Slipper: “This is one of the iconic races in Sydney, but it’s the world’s richest two-year-old race and it’s the one us jockeys here want to win.
“To do it for my second time and for Adrian and, in particular Gai, who brought me to Sydney in the first place. Then, to come back from Hong Kong, Gai and Adrian gave me a lot of support.
“To do it for them, it’s very special, a lot of hard work goes into these moments. It just feels really good.”
Beaten Jockeys:
Ryan Moore (Storm Boy): “Didn’t begin as cleanly as I would have liked. Had to switch my run toward the inside which wasn’t ideal. He’s a very talented horse. Didn’t have the rub of the green today. Probably improve when he goes a bit further.”
Sam Clipperton (Fully Lit): “He ran a really good race. Very brave and have a good kick. Just felt the pinch late.”
Regan Bayliss (Shangri La Express): “He got into a lovely rhythm out in front, had his ears pricked. Just had to come towards the middle of the track. He got a little bit lost out there. Probably a little bit disappointing overall.”
Chad Schofield (Rue De Royale): “I thought he ran very well. He found it a bit quick in the first half but he came off the bridle and quickened nicely. More suited over 1400m.”
Craig Williams (Traffic Warden): “For a horse who is still developing, his performance to run fourth today was exceptional.”
Tim Clark (Straight Charge): “I thought it was a brave performance on speed. I felt the winner at the 300m but he still ran really well.”
James McDonald (Switzerland): “He just came off the bridle a long way from home. I think he has come to the end of it.”
Mark Zahra (Bodyguard): “Just didn’t finish off today.”
Hugh Bowman (Dublin Down): “He paid the price for the wider barrier. I was proud of his effort. I thought he had enough at the furlong but is one to follow into his 3yo career.”
Kerrin McEvoy (Coleman): “Huge run by him. Great training effort by Matty. He had to come up to Sydney, back up, had the little foot issue. He felt great the horse, lovely individual. I thought I was the winner at the 300m, he gave a nice kick and Blake just got the splits. Too good the last three or four strides. Brilliant effort by him and by Matt.”
Tom Marquand (Holmes A Court): “He went forward into a nice position, relaxed good and ran a solid race.”
Adam Hyeronimus (Prost): “I thought there was merit to the run. He got back and settled nicely but I felt the speed increased for him when they came out of the chute. It sent him spinning a bit until we got to the furlong really when he made ground late.”
Jamie Kah (Hayasugi): “Lucky we got around in the end. She nearly fell over out of the gates and nearly fell over again. A non event today.”
Jason Collett (Manaal): “She has gone great. Just the barrier draw really. If she draws a gate she is closer and closer in the finish.”
Damian Lane (Eneeza): “She ran super. She is so honest, just had to give some ground from the start and poor barrier. Ultimately I couldn’t pick them up. She finished strongly.”
