Black Type Wins
1st G3 Randwick Arrowfield Breeders' Plate 1000m (2021) (Debut Run)
Race Result:
1st: Sejardan (J Collett/G Portelli) - $5.50
2nd: Shalatin (J Ford/J Pride) - $4.40
3rd: Ojai (J Duggan/J Cummings) - $4.80
Winning Time: 1:04.06 Last 600m: 35.12
Margins: ½ Neck x Long Neck
Winning Trainer: Gary Portelli
On the win: “That was scary to watch. I know Jason said before the race he was hoping to get a position but I don’t think you can on this bloke. You’ve just got to ride him cold.”
“He waited and when I saw him open up there with about 200 to go, I thought he was home. Then I just saw Joe’s colours coming through and I thought, ‘oh no’. I think we got beaten one day by Pierro when we thought we were home with Rebel Dane because the angle’s funny here and I didn’t want to go up too early because all my owners thought they’d won. It’s pretty embarrassing when they’re second.”
On the colt: “It’s a lot more profitable when you win with a colt. He had to do what he did today to prove to me he’s the real deal. It was a strong race and the backmarkers weren’t playing today. He’s just done everything you want to see. He is the real deal.”
On the future: “My job now is to give him a break and get him back and have him in first class order for the big one.””
Need a spell?: “He’s a tough horse. I probably wouldn’t have to but I will. Now that he’s qualified for the Golden Slipper, we’ll aim up more than likely at the (Inglis) Millennium, a $2 million race, and we’ll probably go around a fortnight from the Golden Slipper and hopefully draw a little better than today because I don’t know if my heart can take much more than that, I’ve got to say.
“It’s a real thrill for the owners. We actually had a presentation today for the trophy for the Breeders’ Plate and the breeder of the horse, he’s got the trophy.
On his wins: “So he’s got the Breeders’ Plate and the breeder, the mare. He’s got foals by Capitalist out of her. Hopefully he remembers me when it comes to a trainer, I’d like to take that one.”
“You don’t have to peak him before the Slipper now. All I have to do now is make sure I manage him and have him in good order on the day. There is no doubt he’ll improve on what we’ve seen. He’s got an old head on a young body. He relaxed beautifully in the birdcage. He’s just a gem to work with. He is a beautiful horse to deal with and geez, I don’t know where he’s going to stop.
“He’s bred to get over further. He could get up to a mile later on. I know there are going to be better horses coming through, we’ve only seen a small group of two-year-olds to this point, but he’ll improve as much as anyone. I think we saw a winner.”
Winning Jockey: Jason Collett
On the win: “He began better today which I was happy about, I said to Gary [Portelli] that was probably number one on the list to get him out a bit cleaner, he’s taken good improvement from that trial to his first start, to today.
On the run: “I got on the back of Annabel’s [Nobel] and it really didn’t take me far. I got a bit worried when the tempo was strong and we got flushed out at the 600m, but I just held him together, got him into the straight balanced and as you saw he let down really well.”
“I went past him [Shalatin] and I could see he was all tangled up but I didn’t think he was going that well, but then the last 100m after we hit the front it was a little bit worrying when I could see Shalatin coming out of the corner of my eye.”
On the horse: “I love him, he’s got such a great head on him which is probably the difference at this age, like Gary said he’s got an old head on young shoulders and it showed today, his race sense is really good for a horse that’s only had one trial and a few starts.”
“He’s got attitude which you want, he did get his leg up at his first start and had to be vetted, so there are antics there which hopefully in time will be ironed out. Horses like him are going to be lovely, they’ve got a frame to fill into so time like that will do him well.
Beaten Jockeys:
Tommy Berry (Nobel): “A lovely colt but everything is just happening too quick for him.”
Josh Parr (Contemporary): “Three wide Rosehill 1100m is difficult.”
James Innes (Shirvo): “Just wasn’t himself today.”
Jay Ford (Shalatin): “Ran terrific again. Still very green and raw but closed off strong.”
Jean Van Overmeire (Cannonball): “Really good run. Once he puts it together will be a really nice horse.”
Tim Clark (Mount Brilliant): “Just a bit inexperienced. Too much pressure.”
Jenny Duggan (Ojai): “She was so gallant in defeat. I thought at the 200m I was the winner but the boys just got her late. She is a nice filly this one.
Kathy O'Hara (Snitcat): “Very good effort from her today. She landed in a really nice spot and she fought on bravely. Will make a nice filly next preparation.”
Brodie Loy (Birdonawing): “Going to be a lovely filly in time.”
