Winning Trainer: Terry Robinson
On the feeling of the win: “It is a wonderful feeling to be here. He is just a super horse. For Mick (Lill), you must have the greatest smile on your face. He has been a trainer, he bred this horse and it is a great result for him, my staff and my family.”
On setting him for this after Country Champs: “I did. I always thought his best distance is yet to come when he gets up to 1400, 1600. It’s Tommy and the horse. I’m just so proud of them. Tommy has been fantastic, he’s been a great friend. I’ve got to give a great wrap to my staff too. I had a bad fall six weeks ago and my brother has actually ridden the horse most of his work since then.”
On being back: “I was just fortunate he was able to come back and give me a hand, and Tara, my strapper Maddie and my wife. I’m so lucky. Aim for it again next year? “If he hangs together and everything goes to plan, why not?”
On the finish: “No. I didn’t think he was ever going to get there. I knew he’d be strong and I always knew he’d just find. He just keeps giving. He’s never beat that horse.”
Winning Jockey: Tommy Berry
After the win: “Can we talk about the crowd first. We are back at Randwick. It’s so good having everyone here.”
On the training effort: “A lot of people where querying whether Terry could do it first up. He knows this horse back to front. He had a bit of work to do at the top of the straight. As I said all week we don’t know how good he is. Everytime we raise the bar he keeps jumping it. He loves to get in a bit of a battle. He beat one of those hard heads that was competing in group races. Just so happy for Terry. He’s a champion bloke, great family. Terry’s brother has been doing all his trackwork.”
On the win: “He felt strong all the way through. He’s got that attribute that he wants to lay on his rivals when he gets close to them. It was the perfect preparation. Not a hiccup at all. It was the complete opposite last preparation. I think Terry’s training performance to get him to the Championships was better as he had so many issues. I spoke to Terry yesterday morning. He said I couldn’t have him any better.
On the post-race: “It was incredible. The horse is usually very timid but I took him to where the crowd was. It was a pretty good moment for him. He took it all in and so did I. Half of them probably didn’t back him but everyone is happy to back out in the public.”
Beaten Jockeys:
Nash Rawiller (Handle The Truth): “Brilliant run. It exposed us a little bit soon when the leader ran off but I knew he;d be bloody tough to run down. Full credit to the winner. My bloke was very good.”
Josh Parr (Plonka): “Very well prepared horse. He ran really well all things considered.”
Jeff Penza (Aheadofhistime): “He ran a super race. Likes to get out wide and run on but that wasn’t happening. Had to go through the middle. He ran really well.”
James McDonald (Spiranac): “Beautiful mare. Ran her heart out. Arguably should have won. She ran well.”
Hugh Bowman (Edit): “I was really pleased with him. Come the Autumn over 1400m he will be right in the mix against these horses.”
Tim Clark (Ice In Vancouver): “Just knocked up late. Ran OK.”
Jason Collett (Island Bay Boy): “Raced keen.”
Matthew Palmer (Nadaraja): “Did a lot of wrong things. Obviously very disappointing but he’s probably come to the end of his campaign. Looking for a break.”
Regan Bayliss (Mr Hussill): “Great run. He’s a lightly raced horse who will keep improving. Will be a great Country Championships horse for next year.”
Robbie Dolan (Ceasefire): “Probably a horse for next year. Just caught wide the trip.”
Alysha Collett (Patino Ruby): “She was getting pinballed everywhere. She’s a nice little horse.”
Glen Boss (Sunrise Ruby): “She ran terrific. Roughed up on the turn but to her credit really rallied and hit the line well.”
Kerrin McEvoy (Irish Songs): “Good run. He got a little bit lit up mid-race but presented and stuck on nicely the last bit.”
