Winning Trainer: Peter Moody
On bouncing back: “Great thrill, congratulations to the team at Waikato Stud. We had faith in this horse and people thought he was disappointing in the Toorak, but the track just didn’t suit him that day. Luke (Nolen) gave him a gun run today, presented him at the right time and got the job done, God bless him.”
On Fangirl closing late: “They pay on the line.”
On winning a $10 million race: “This is the second biggest turf race in the world. We’ll take it.”
On coming back to training after a hiatus: “It’s tremendous, it’s been a great thrill and great ride. Mark and Pippa and the team back at Waikato, congratulations team. That’s tremendous and thanks for inviting me to be a part of this horse.”
Winning Jockey: Luke Nolen
On raiding Sydney’s riches: “Bloody oath. You New South Welshman are down there the other side raiding ours at the moment (James McDonald dominating at Flemington today) so we thought we’d get a bit of it back. Really pleased, really rewarding and even more special I get to share it with Moods (trainer Peter Moody).”
On beating a quality field in a $10 million race: “Who cares. They could be hacks. $10 million to beat them, it doesn’t matter.”
On the horse’s development: “He’s been progressive. He came over with a lowish rating but he came with nice form around him, albeit he hadn’t been winning races it was good to see him to build his way into this. We thought he was a real chance in the Toorak at his last, he probably didn’t get track conditions quite to suit. Today we blended into the race really quickly. It sort of took me by surprise and then he floated around and let the second horse into the race a bit, but he was really good.”
On winning a $10 million race: “I always say it’s not how you win them, it’s how you celebrate them. I’m gonna be nice and bloody pissed after this one.”
Beaten Jockeys:
Rachel King (Overpass): “Still a creditable run. Not sure he ran out a strong 1500.”
Regan Bayliss (Converge): “Didn’t travel great today. Was a bit on and off the bridle in the run. Just had to ride for luck. Got to the line OK.”
Tim Clark (In The Congo): “I thought he was extremely brave on speed. Absorbed some pressure and was the best of the on-pacers.”
Nash Rawiller (Vilana): “I think he’s a beautiful horse for the future. Got back further than we hoped.”
Luke Nolen (I Wish I Win): “
Brenton Avdulla (Mr Mozart): “Had to do a bit too much work. Was in a controlling position but if he gets his own way he can run well.”
Jay Ford (Hilal): “Obviously got back from the wide gate. Travelled well but seems to be a lack of desire.”
Tommy Berry (Military Expert): “I had a tough run. Tricky barrier for him. Thought I was going to get a bit of cover from Mr Mozart. He’s done a good job this prep.”
Tom Sherry (Lightsaber): “Racing out of form but thought he ran to his credit. Hopefully he can pick it back up.”
Sam Clipperton (Pinstriped): “He covered a lot of ground. Raced a bit keen. It cruelled his chances.”
Jamie Spencer (Light Infantry): “Stepped slow from the barriers. Got caught on the back of Willie Pike turning for home. Interrupeted my momentum and had to wait for Hugh to go. Finished off really well.”
Frankie Dettori (Welwal): “I had him in a good spot and the winner came across and took me out of the race. That was it.”
Kerrin McEvoy (Hinged): “Great run. Decided to ride her a tiny bit more conservative from the draw. She finished off really well.”
Hugh Bowman (Fangirl): “Just delighted with her. So proud of her. She went up to win and the winner was I think floating. He surged and it was a great race. Disappointing not to win. But proud.”
Jamie Kah (Chain Of Lightning): “She felt like she jarred up on that ground when I let her off the bridle.”
William Pike (Gypsy Goddess): “She was fantastic. Ultimate professional. I was travelling really well just rounding the bend and I couldn’t quite get mobile. All in all a fantastic run.”
Jake Noonan (Lady Of Honour): “No excuses in transit. May have come to the end of it.”
Jason Collett (Hope In Your Heart): “Probably found that ground a bit firm. Chased her early. Never comfortable in the first half of the race. Amazing turn of foot she had to finish it off.
Jordan Childs (Cardinal Gem): “He ran well. Just gets scared inside horses.”
Keagan Latham (Jimmy The Bear): “Really happy with his run. Never been around this bend before. It was something new to him. He’ll keep progressing.”
