“It was a very moderately run race. This horse is a genuine stayer and you can see in his last run at Flemington (that) he needs that good tempo and thrives off it.

“I wasn’t overly happy early but thankfully he got the job done and got him over the line. His first try out to the trip (and) I’ve got a lot of time for this horse.

“He’s consistent, makes his own luck and the team have done a good job with him. They basically walked, trot and cantered until they got to the home turn and it completely changes the complexion of the race.

“Thankfully he got the job done, a good way to start the day and great to get a win for Gerry (Ryan) and the boys. They’ve had a lot of fun with this horse. We expected him to get up so it’s nice when that happens.”

What’s next: “Well he’s still at a relatively low rating so that will jump him up a little bit. But he needs to win his next start to get him into like a Bart Cummings or something like that. Maybe even a ‘Metrop’ if his rating was high enough. He’s still got a bit to do but he’s the right type.”

Winning Jockey: Jye McNeil

Been on the journey with this horse: “The team has done a wonderful job with him. He’s just thriving with his racing. That is another asset that we’ve found with him being able to step up over the 2400 metres.

“The future looks bright for him.”

How was it for you tempo wise in the run: “In the early stages because I was stepping up in trip I didn’t want to rush to the front too much. Will Price (on Nerve Not Verve) was keen to roll forward on his mount and I elected to let him go and through the middle stages he began to go a bit too slow, which tended to get my horse travelling a bit stronger than I would have liked.

“There was a bit of a mid-race move, but he sustained his run really nicely and I’m looking forward to the rest of his career.”
