“I thought we’d sold out (in the straight) and I thought he’s a bit tougher than this (at that stage) but to his credit he dug deep. A good man on him, Dec. He’s a good tough rider.
“I’ve always been keen on him as a staying horse but probably a little but disappointing early (as) he wanted to crash through the bridle a little bit but it has just been about waiting with him and I thought now he’s ready to go.”
Bought in NZ for $11,000: “I was poking about over there and thought he’s a nice horse (and) with a bit of time (he’d improve). I put two good friends into him - Peter MIller and Phil. It’s Phil’s 70th birthday today so that’s a good present for him.”
Winning Jockey: Declan Bates
“It was a good old battle up the straight with my friend Johnny (Allen). Johnny is a hard man to get past especially when he’s on one of Ciaron’s. But my horse had to dig deep and in the end he was too good.
“At the top of the straight I thought he had me, to be honest. Grabowski was lengthening off the bend a bit better. When my fella balanced up he got to the line and he’ll get even further, I think.
“He’s still a bit of a baby. I actually fell off him coming back in here. He took those runs over shorter distances just to learn his trade but once he learns what he’s doing and Paul gets him over those distances then we’ll see a better horse.”
