Winning Trainer: Ciaron Maher and David Eustace (Declan Maher speaking)

What a great victory: “It was. He came over from New Zealand this horse and we just took our time with him, schooled him up. It was a big effort from the team. Willie McCarthy, Chris McCarthy, also Steve (Pateman), we’ve worked hard to get him here today. He’s a good jumper, it was a good ride by Steve and it was a good win.”

15th jumps win for the season: “Ciaron, Dave, myself, the whole team, we’ve been working very hard to try and get a nice group of jumpers. This year they’ve all lined up and gone well.

“There’s some strong owners in this horse too. We’ve got my brothers, mum and dad, Sandy McGregor, Brant Murrihy, one of Ciaron’s good mates and it’s always good to get a win for family.”

The race name: “Belinda (Glass) and the whole team here at Ballarat do a great job through all these tough times and that was what the race name was all about, thank-you to the whole industry for keeping racing going.”

What about the ride: “It was a perfect ride by him. He was a little bit keen early but Steve didn’t panic. He eventually came back to him and he let him stretch when he had to. It was a good win.”

Winning Jockey: Steven Pateman

Win 21 of season: “He was awesome today. What was most exciting is he’s already jumping like a horse that is more experienced over hurdles. He really attacks his hurdles and the only one we were untidy at was one down the back where I steadied him right back. He was super impressive and he’s got the record on the flat to be a handy hurdler.”

Plan to ride forward: “He’s been keen in his trials and it would have meant fighting him for no real reason if we wanted to take a sit. One day he’ll have to take a sit and with a bit more experience, he should be fine.”

By Raise The Flag: “We’ve got one running on the flat today. I probably shouldn’t talk her up. She’s a Raise The Flag and they look the real deal as jumpers.”

Best season: “It’s not the best, but it’s bloody great to get going again after last year. It wasn’t a terrible year last year.

“It started badly last year with the cobalt thing and they getting knocked out, but it finished alright. It’s good to come back and have a special year, that’s for sure.”
