“I thought we got beat. The only thing I forgot to tell Brett - and he rode him a treat - was ‘don’t hit the front too soon because he pulls up and waits for them’. Thank God he got the photo.
“We were going to run over a mile in Adelaide in a restricted race and he was going to cop 64 (kilos) and he ended up getting a stone bruise the morning of the race. That put us back and then we were going to run in the RA Lee last week but on the Tuesday morning he had a bout of colic. I had to treat him and once you treat them, seven days with the drugs in the system, we had to wait.
“With nearly seven weeks between runs and going to the mile, we thought it might be better keeping him fresh and going to the mile. The plan wasn’t going to be running today and then back up next week over 2000 metres.
“We might be better off taking him home and keeping him a little bit fresh and head to the (Winter Championship) Final. I think he’s a better horse when it is wet. Rapt he’s got the result.”
Winning Jockey: Brett Prebble
<DIdn’t think he got the photo because the cameraman focused on the other horse>
“Coming back to see your name in the frame is more exciting than thinking you’ve won.
“Credit to the horse. I’ve never ridden him before and wasn’t really going - I had nothing in my hands early - but when I woke him up he really gave me a good effort. I probably exposed him too soon but I’ve had a ride on him now and I’ll know him better next time.”
The missing instructions: “It was probably the most important key to the puzzle and I didn’t have it. But he’s (Gower) a good judge and kudos to him.”
