“I didn’t want to go the crow today, I did last start, but back in grade today with the blinkers on - a couple of big ticks there. Rhys McLeod back on today too, the stable jockey, he knows the horse well. It was a dominant win and good to see.
“I was very confident. The race mapped well. He was well placed today with the blinkers back on. He worked well with them in between runs. This horse he’s just a bit of a nervy type and we’ve got the red ear muffs on him. I thought today he paraded the best he’s paraded for me at his three starts (for Ryan).
“He played up a little behind the gates but if he behaves himself and everything goes well, I don’t think they went that hard so it makes the win look even a little bit better. He’s a very progressive horse and I think he’ll go through his grades.
“I’m still learning about him - that’s his third start for me - but I’ll let him tell me when and where we’ll head next. He’s a horse with a lot of ability. I ride him most days and he’s got a great action. He’s very clean winded. He’s on the up.
“Keeping him fresh, keeping him smiling and happy, we’ll discuss the future shortly.”
Winning Jockey: Rhys McLeod
“We didn’t have the best of runs, to be honest, and we got there way too soon. His ability shone through. It was a good win and his three runs for Nick have been really good.
“Being wide, I didn’t want to get there that early, but I thought Dirty Deeds would give a good kick but it didn’t and it left us in front a long way out. Really good win.
“He’s still got a lot of growing up to do mentally. I think he’s going to be a really nice horse, I think.”
** PHILLIP STOKES ON ANCESTRY GOING FIRST-UP IN OAKLEIGH PLATE **
Asked if it is a bold move: “Not really. I think he’ll be down in the weights and the last time he was first-up he won over 1200 metres here. It (that run) got under my radar a bit. I think he’s going really well. I’m happy with him, he’s stronger and he had a good break.
“I think he’s good horse. Sprinting is his forte and I think he’s got a very good win in him and hopefully it’s the Oakleigh Plate.”
