On jumps riding and training: “How good is training, bugger riding over jumps.”
Getting John Allen to ride: “We believe she choked down at Murray Bridge last start so the tongue tie went on. It’s funny, we’ve been trying to get Johnny (Allen) to ride this mare for years. I know he is tied up with the big stables but it’s just never worked out and sure enough, he picks up the ride, rode her an absolute peach and we’re delighted to have our first metro winner. We always wanted to get her to Sandown and we always wanted to get Johnny on her.”
“We thought he would suit her. She is a bit flighty and Johnny was never going to be worried about that. She is difficult to handle and so thanks so much to my wife Jess. Because I had to be here earlier to ride so she brought her in the truck. The owners were really disappointed with Murray Bridge but there had to be an explanation so today was satisfying.”
On getting the win after recent disappointments: “Today it just worked out for her. At Warrnambool she started favourite and she just got a bit bottled up and she doesn’t like that. Murray Bridge was a nice race for her but she definitely choked down because she was too bad to be true. That will do her confidence really good. She is a mare who will just stay in work too, she doesn’t spell well.”
Winning Jockey: John Allen
Steve trying to get you on: “He has actually and luckily it worked out good today. The mare turned up in great form and she put in a great performance. Steve had a disappointing day out there with the jumps today so hopefully that will make up for it.”
When did you find out had ride: “On the way down. Matt Hyland rang me to say that Rhys McLeod was not feeling the best and wanted to know if I’d be here in time and luckily enough I got here in the nick of time and was happy to jump on.”
Timed the run: “It worked out well. There was nice enough pace and they slowed up down the back. I just got rolling into it. She’s a good staying mare and I made use of her and luckily we got rolling into the race at the right time and she toughed it out well.”
Will he be able to keep you on: “Hopefully.”
