On so Joe’s birthday and his partner Amy McDonald not being on-course: “It’s Joe’s birthday today, he decided to stay home - there was no Brierly favourite today - but we got the win. Joe’s going to have a day at Extreme Bounce with his friends and his mum.
“She’s being the great mum that she is and getting the rest of the horses worked and looking after the (Grand) Annual runner tomorrow. We’re hoping for a good day tomorrow and we’ll celebrate hard on Thursday.
“She would have been going off her head at home.”
On the horse: “He’s just a real legend, this horse. I was saying to the barrier boy who was leading me around that he’s the stable pony, he’s used for the nervous horses and stuff. They’re worth their weight in gold these old steeplechasers and on his off days he likes to race in steeplechase races.
“He just bowls around. His flat form is dead last, dead last and Pakenham doesn’t suit these sort of horses because when the other horses quicken away they sort of lose interest because it’s really hard for them.
On today’s run: “He cornered like a greyhound. I thought he trialled really good the other day agaist the Brierly and Annual horses and once he got onto the course proper he got his second wind.
“I thought I was always going to get there. I’m not sure how well Runaway was going before he got hampered but I had a much lighter weight.
“He made hard work of it down the straight but he’s only won the one race - he’s not a prolific winner - so he probably doesn’t know how to attack the line but he is very genuine all the same.”
