Heavy ground: “He seemed to get through it alright, didn’t he.

“It was impressive. He did some work to get to the lead and just kept going. Very good.”

How he got the horse: “A good story. His old owner, Leon McDonald, who passed away, we paid $75,000 for him at the yearling sales, from Collingrove, and he came to us and was a pest.

“Oh he was a pest early. My daughter, she’s got to take a lot of credit for this horse getting to the races because he was a pest. He’d just buck, did everything, but we persevered. She didn’t want to but I told everyone we’d persevere and we turned him into the racehorse he is today.”

Future: “There’s a nice race on Ballarat Cup Day, the Stockade, and that was the plan all along to raise the distances and the pressure.

“You’d think there’d be more pressure at Ballarat and then to have a spell and bring him back for the autumn.”

Winning Jockey: Jason Maskiell

“I really liked him the other day and then one of the jockeys behind me mentioned that they didn’t like their horse so that got me a bit worried.

“I just believed in him today. He’s better off when he’s a chaser and he really floated in front today. Especially at the last 100 (metres), he was waiting for them.

“I think he will be a blinkers horse down the track but he’s doing it off raw ability at the moment.

Heavy track: “I was a bit worried about it but he handled it really good. He didn’t dip-dive it once but he uses no energy so he’ll get a bit further as well.”
