Dominant win: “I looked up and they had gone half way and I thought I was imagining it, especially the finish. Who needs sound when you get the cash. It’s just terrific. This horse has been so good to us. I think I’ve told the owners seven times that he’s reached his benchmark and we’d be flat winning another one, but he keeps stepping up to the plate. There’s a great bunch of owners that have supported me and they’ll be going off tonight.”

Aimed at the Kosciuszko: “He’s got more issues than me this horse. He pulled-up with atrial fibrillation after his last start in a $2 million race when we thought we had him spot on and he went terrible. It was a bit of a quiet night and one of his owners drew the slot in the Kosciuszko which was a double blow. We always look for good opportunities to come down. Obviously we’re a long way from home and we really need to know they can perform when they come down and one of the great advanntages of being in Albury is that he was also in at Kembla Grange and Ballarat and we didn’t have to decide until this morning where we came.

“It’s great for all the staff. It’s been a rechard time up there slogging out in the wet, but they rock up to work with a smile, they’re bloody champions.”

Popular horse: “He’s not that popular with me. I told them when we were saddling up that I would have $100 on him for them, but I forgot. We’ll work that out.”

“It’s great for young Teo. He won the Echuca Cup for us and has always delivered. To have a jockey like him to ride 53-½ (kg) is terrific. He’s a great young lad and he came out and was so positive about the horse. He put a real spring in my step. A credit to Teo and I can’t wait to get home to Albury tonight.”

Winning Jockey: Teodore Nugent

Great strike-rate: “We’ve teamed up many times before. I would hate to know what our percentage strike-rate would be like. It would be pretty high up there. He gives me good success, the Echuca Cup and everytime we seem to team up, he puts me on a good one. He gives me good confidence coming out today. He’s travelled five hours to get down here. Second-up I couldn’t fault his form. His run in the Town Plate in Wagga behind Front Page was full of merit. Coming here today, he’s one for one on the heavy and back on a heavy deck today, I was really confident.”

Still part of the spring: “It’s great, especially coming out of my apprenticeship. It’s great to have momentum going forward and good supporters behind me. We are pretty lucky we can ride light and the horse got in with 53-1/2kg today and he won with a leg in the air. He had a bit of a look coming down the straight as there’s a bit of crowd here today. He probably hung his head over the fence to say gidday to a few, so I had to quickly round him back up and urge him along again. He won with a bit of merit and I’m sure he can string another few together off the back of this. Full credit to Mitch and his team and I’m grateful to reap the rewards.”
