On winning a Cox Plate: “He’s a beautiful horse Anamoe and he’s been a pleasure to train but that’s a proper horse race. The best horse race I’ve had anything to do with.
“It’s a humbling experience for me but I’m just grateful I can be a part of a horse as great as Anamoe. It’s an unbelievable feeling, it’s got me a little lost for words but I’ll find them there somewhere.
“The truth is he’s just had a gun preparation, a couple of times it hasn’t been plain sailing but my team have come together in phenomenal fashion to have him arrive in nearly perfect shape.
“Halfway through the race I couldn’t help but feel very calm about it. There were no surprises, everything went to script and we had the horse in absolutely mint condition to perform.
“The right horses have run second and third so it’s a proper Cox Plate and it's an absolutly humbling experience to be winning it.”
Were there moments where it could have been too hard: “Yes. It would drive a lesser man to the bottle, a few moments that we went through this preparation but he’s been managed by an extremely efficiient team.
“I’ve got some unbelievably talented and passionate people behind him that helped to make me look good standing here doing interviews for four Group 1 wins out of four this preparation.
“It’s hard enough to win one Group 1 let alone a picket fence and that has been the absolute perfect Cox Plate preparation and evidently that’s how you win a Cox Plate.
“I can say with pride now that my team have been able to do it and I’m sure that my fellas in Vin Cox, and Ross Cole and Jason Walsh will take great confidence in bringing the Cox Plate to Dubai to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and to show him this what a horse as great as Anamoe can achieve for him and he’s got the passion to race horses like this in this country and he has the belief he has to back us and do the job.
“I had a fella give me some past DVDs of champion horses and there I am watching Nikinsky having a pick of grass after the attempt to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triompe. I’ve seen Dancing Brave, the Mill Reefs of the world.
“You put him in that stratosphere. He’s that good.
“We’re lucky to be a part of it and it’s a really humbling experience and the cauldron at Moonee Valley here, the centenary Cox Plate edition. It’s everything we could do to avoid the feeling of a fait de accompli because we had the right horse.
“You still need to have them in the right order and have the man on board that is riding in such superb fashion.”
Winning Jockey: James McDonald
Why did he always want to win this race in particular: “It’s the best horses. I was on a champion today.
“I’m not going to lie, it’s been a big build up. The Cox Plate. It’s unbelievable and I can’t believe it. Especially on this horse.
“It’s been a massive build up and I felt the tension. I could cut it with a butter knife but it is unbelievable and good to get it over and done with.
“I don’t know how Hughey Bowman did it with four of them. What a race. I’m so proud of this horse. Full credit to him. He’s unbelievable.
Cox Plate: “It’s the one, isn’t it. Level playing field, the best of the best. It takes bravery, guts, determination from all these horses and always it seems the best one wins.
“It goes back to Greg Childs and Sunline, Bossy and Makybe Diva. Those are the race you live and dream of as a kid and now I’m living it. It’s incredible.”
Wanted his timing to be right: “James made a point of that but he trains his horses to perfection and I’ve had a lot to do with him over the last couple of months and I just love how he thinks about things and executes things.
“He’s got a superstar on his hands and I’m just glad I was the lucky rider on it.”
Should Anamoe ‘take on the world’: “That’s a long way away but I’d love to and wouldn’t say no.”
Personally: “There is a big team to thank. My mum has been a bit unwell so hopefully that is a bit of a ‘kick in the belly and get going’. I’m sure they’ll be in tears, I would have thought.
“I’m proud of everyone behind this team in terms of Anamoe’s preparations being faultless. And ‘Guesty’ who has bolted from a wedding to come and see it.
“Just everyone. Most importantly the horses. Unbelievable.
How did he gather himself to perform today: “I love these days. I don’t know what it is. I turn up and do my best and if I get the little things right throughout a meeting, a) arriving feeling well and strong and things will look after themselves, and I’m on the right horses.
“Yes you’ve got to execute. I try an cross as many Ts and dot as may Is as I can and it seems to work at the moment, touch wood. It is working at the moment.
“That was the one was really close to my hard and I’m rapt with it.”
On the run - at the turn: “James would have been sweating there. I didn’t want to go through that flat spot.
“I was very mindful of that so I wanted to build the revs up and that is hence why I went a tad earlier than I wanted to but he was always going to sustain that gallop even though they looked like they were coming out of the pack to get him, he would have dug deep. He can find a bit.”
What now: “He’s a superstar and he was one horse at three-to-four that could have been anything. We talk about the Dundeel’s of the world that carry it on, he could have been something else.
“This horse, I think he’ll get physically even better. It is just the tip of the iceberg.”
Beaten jockeys:
Jamie Kah (Zaaki): “He was good. The way the rail is today you need to get out wider, but with his laying-in he was in the worst part of the track.”
Mark Zahra (I'm Thunderstruck): “He ran super, it was just the winner’s had a plum run from the barrier and we’ve had to get back and weave through. He was very gallant in defeat.”
Tim Clark (Alligator Blood): “Really brave effort. I thought he went as well today as he has gone all prep.”
Craig Williams (Mr Brightside): “The barrier end up being a really big disadvantage the way the race was run as they didn’t go too fast, but I loved the way that throughout the race he showed how good he is. But, to be giving them that much of a head start, to be having that type of sprint against that calibre of horse at 10 furlongs, we were just a bit vulnerable.”
Nash Rawiller (Mo'unga): “He was awesome. Really good.”
Jamie Spencer (Gold Trip): “I was in the stalls a long time and he got a bit upset, he missed it a beat when they opened and got tightened a little bit for room before the turn in. He probably would have been a place or two closer other than that.”
John Allen (Laws Of Indices): “He’s run super. We had a lovely run, his stamina probably just told on him in the end.”
Damian Lane (Young Werther): “He was honest. He just couldn’t sprint with them off that tempo.”
Ben Melham (Maximal): “He ran good. I thought he was a real sniff up the side, he travelled into it but he’s just a duffer when you let his head go in that ground.”
Chad Schofield (Profondo): “Obviously disappointing. He over-travelled and didn’t let go and finished tailed off.”
Damien Oliver (El Bodegon): “Great run. I was really proud of him. They went a bit steady in the early and mid stages, but I thought he fought it out really well.”
