Emotional win after passing of Donna’s father: “Norm was a big part of us and our stable. The owners rang us up today and said that they don’t mind if we scratch it but I said if we scratched this horse today then Norm would be absolutely livid.

“He was the type of person that was every part of our stable. He’s even with us now. When I rang Neil (Farley) up I said Norm is riding with you today. He’ll help us out.

“To the horses’ credit, last start was a bit of misfortune. It was a class drop again today. He’s a tricky horse and with Normy’s help today he got the job done.”

Norm: “He was always a part of the Bendigo community and the racing club. He was our accountant, he was our instructor in life you might say.

“He’ll let us know when we’ve made a mistake, that’s for sure. He was every part of us and a credit to him where we are now.

“When we moved up to Echuca from Kyneton, he was a part of that every step of the way right up to the last couple of days we were talking horses. He’s a big loss.”

Echuca with floods: “We lease a farm and it has gone under water. They drew a line in the sand, I suppose, and a lot of locals aren’t happy with that.

“One of the owners houses went under today and to see them being evacuated on the other side of the line, and some horses are still dry, it is a hard pill to swallow.”

Winning Jockey: Neil Farley

“My condolences to Mick and Donna’s family. They’ve supported me since I came over and I was rapt when he won.”

On the run: “He’s a funny horse. Always misses the kick and he can overreact if you give him a squeeze.

“He got into a beautiful rhythm with the tempo and even coming to the 400 (metre mark) I was still confident but when given daylight he finds and gets the result.”
