Winning Trainer: James Cummings

“He was strong. He’s got excellent form up the straight when he was really flying as a young colt. He was a bit unlucky facing the breeze in running second in the Maribyrnong Plate twelve months ago and he’s had the ultimate gear change since his most recent start when we used his gate speed and was beaten four lengths behind Lascars, his stablemate, a bit over a month ago at Caulfield.

“Blake Shinn was a trackwork at Caulfield this morning and I suggested this horse has been training strongly enough. You could pinch this race, put him in the race and he’ll run a big race.”

Was the rain going to improve chances: “It was probably more in their favour (Renosu and Kin) than for Selous who ultimately was the furthest back from our placegetters.

“Our horses had all been training beautifully in the lead-up to this and it was a good opportunity for all four of them.

“I do note with interest that the ran around 58.5 (seconds) there - very similar to the two-year-old race earlier today. So perhaps the 5mm that they had in that recent shower isn’t going to be too bad for the track and with the weather clearing hopefully we can continue to have a good day for the remainder for the card.”

On the gelding decision - hard or not: “Yes and no. He’s beautifully bred and had some stakes form as a two-year-old but the horse has completely gone missing and if we’re going to make a racehorse out of him there was only one decision to make.

“But he really turned the corner fast. We normally would spell the horses and come back next time but there was something about this horse that I didn’t want to just let him loose into the paddock when there was something he might have had to offer.

“This race was identified six weeks ago as a race that he’d feature in and horses with good two-year-old form can regularly come back in this race at set weight and penalties and his straight form was there to back him up.

“With having been gelded and quickly back to the races, the horse didn’t know himself and Blake Shinn, at trackwork this morning, was enthused by the stable’s report that he could have pinched the race if he hopped into it and they might underestimate him”

On Kin: “She’s a nice little IMpending filly to bring her into the fray in the black type. She loomed up as a good chance and it was her stablemate who was able to deny her, all bar the winner and she ran a good race, back to form and 1000 metres looks like it suited her down to the ground.”

On brother Edward having a runner in the Cup: “I’m very proud of him. To be a 36-year-old trainer and have a runner in the Melbourne Cup with the number two saddlecloth, it’s a great effort.”

On Anamoe towards Saturday: “He’s flying. He’s loving his training and he stepped out for a nice gallop this morning.

“The horse has not taken a backward step since the Cox Plate and that picket fence is looking good in the lead-up to the Champions Stakes. We feel pretty privileged to be saddling him up for the first time at Flemington at his Melbourne home track to hopefully put himself on show for the Spring Carnival.

“It is going to take a big effort, as we know. We take nothing for granted and he’s going to have to turn up and run a big race but gee we’re pleased with the horse.”

Winning Jockey: Blake Shinn

Wider gate, maybe better part of the track: “They were the cards we were dealt and just rode the race. He’s a high speed horse and we just used his natural speed today.

“He got in a lovely rhythm just behind Xtravagant Star. He quickened really well. I went early but I thought the first quarter of the race went very smooth for my horse therefore I pushed the button, he’s pretty fit, he’s been gelded since his last run and he’s pretty focused on the job today. Great win.”

“The barrier made our decision where we were going to be and having a horse right near us was always going to be a good reference to get us a cart along and we were able to sit three-quarters-of-a-length behind it and let it take us as far we we needed to go before I really pushes the button.

“I went early but it was fading and I didn’t spend much gas in the first part. It felt great underneath me and when I let him down he galloped out really strong. It was a great win.”
