Might have scratched with the weather: “We asked a few questions of ourselves this morning. It belted down at Flemington for about an hour and I grimaced.

“But he had one go on the heavy at the end of his prep last start so he was good enough today, thanks God.

“The horse is going well. He’s still holding his winter coat so a bit of improvement in him. He’s god good form around him and he had a nice light weight today and was good enough to hold them off.

“He’s always had good form around him. This was probably the only race for him for about three or four weeks so we were lucky to get away with it.

“He’s a progressive horse and we haven’t had a good crack in him as yet.”

Next: “He doesn’t like the straight so that rules out Cup Week for him. We’ll plot a path for him and he might end up running at Sandown.”

Winning Jockey: Damian Lane

“Great to get a win with a whole group of people I’ve had a good association with. He’s always been a very handy, talented horse and we always thought he’d get to a really good level.

“He’s taken a little while to do that and hopefully today he’s on his way to doing that and he can go on to better races.

“I thought he’d handle (the heavy track) but I’ve said that about two or three of Matty’s over the last weeks and got it wrong. I wasn’t as keen to put my neck on the line this time but we got it right.”
