Proud of his son riding his first winner for him: “Very proud moment. The poor bugger had to go away from most of his family to go away to Perth because us the ridiculous situation with Racing Victoria - and I’m happy to say it loudly.
“These kids should be with their family but Mitch Beer is doing a great job at Albury (with him).
“We got him to drive down yesterday afternoon for trackwork and spend the night and he’s driving back home tonight back to Albury.
“But to have him ride his first winner for me, a very proud moment.
“He rode him good, he knows the horse. He was riding trackwork when he was first learning so he knows the horse back to front. He’s not an easy horse to ride - you’ve got to riding him back off the speed and he hangs in when you let him go, but he got the job done and a super proud moment.”
His reaction when Jett said he wanted to be a jockey: “He didn’t have a choice. I think he’s the 27th Stanley to be a jockey (and) I don’t think there’ll be any more in Australia.
“He does his homework, he does everything right and he’s got a very bright future.
“The way he’s going he’ll outride the number of winners he needs to get back here (to Victoria) but whether it is here or in Sydney he deserves to be in a big stable and getting a lot of rides.”
Winning Jockey: Jett Stanley
“Amazing. He’s not an easy horse to ride. He likes to grab hold of the bit and get running and lays in quite severely so I was trying to get cover and when he kept grabbing onto the bit and not letting me slot in I just knew I had to relax him at some point in the race so I decided to relax him for the next 400 metres.
“Then when we got to the 600 I decided to slowly track up into the race and once we got into the straight he was guns ablazing. He can really sprint in the heavy, this horse.
“He was laying in a fair bit so I had to correct him a few times but over the line, I definitely won’t forget that. Pretty special win.”
Watching his Dad and deciding to be a jockey: “There are photos of me when I was two-years-old in silks sitting on our pet dog pretending to be a jockey so I’ve always wanted to be a jockey and as soon as Dad turned into a horse trainer I just wanted to ride a winner for him.”
Aims to return to Victoria or to Sydney racing: “Right now I’m enjoying my country claim and with Mitch Beer who has been supportive and all the staff in Albury who have been huge supporters. I hope to come here a few days a week and keep punching home some winners.
“We’ll see where life takes us.”
